South and Torrance High students visited FlightWave Aerospace for a hands-on look at unmanned aircraft technology and future aerospace career paths. |
Torrance students got a firsthand look at where classroom learning can lead when 32 Aero-Flex pre-apprentices from South High School and Torrance High School visited FlightWave Aerospace in Torrance.
The field trip, coordinated by the South Bay Workforce Investment Board, introduced students to the fast-growing world of unmanned aircraft systems. FlightWave Aerospace, founded in Torrance, specializes in advanced drones used for defense, surveillance, mapping, infrastructure inspection, disaster response, and other mission-critical work. For Torrance families, the visit was more than a field trip. It showed students a direct connection between local education, hands-on training, and high-demand careers. Programs like Aero-Flex give young people a way to explore advanced manufacturing and aerospace pathways before graduation, helping them see what is possible in industries that are already part of the South Bay economy.
During the visit, students met FlightWave President Shawn Webb and learned how drone technology moves from concept to design, testing, and real-world deployment. The experience highlighted how mechanical, electrical, and software engineering all come together in modern aerospace work.
The visit also reinforced Torrance’s long connection to innovation and aerospace. By opening the doors of a local company to high school students, the program gave future engineers, technicians, and problem-solvers a clearer picture of how their interests can turn into real opportunities.
