Torrance Homeowners May Qualify for Earthquake Retrofit Grants

Citywide eligibility could help residents strengthen older homes before the next major quake.

Torrance homeowners may want to check whether their property qualifies for earthquake retrofit assistance. The City of Torrance says all Torrance ZIP codes are eligible for the Earthquake Soft-Story Program, with eligible residents able to apply for grants up to $13,000 for retrofit work.

The city also says all Torrance ZIP codes are eligible for the Earthquake Brace + Bolt Program, with eligible residents able to apply for grants up to $3,000 to help reduce potential earthquake damage.

This belongs in This Week’s Big Buzz because it is a citywide homeowner safety and money-saving story. It should not be repeated later in City Hall Watch.

Earthquake preparation can be expensive, and grant money may help homeowners take action sooner. For older homes or vulnerable structures, this could be a practical safety upgrade with real financial value.
