Power Outage Prep Matters Before Summer Heat Arrives

SCE customers can check outage status, sign up for alerts, and prepare for scheduled maintenance work.

As warmer weather approaches, Torrance homeowners may want to review their power-outage plan before the first uncomfortable outage catches the household unprepared.

Southern California Edison’s outage center allows customers to check outage status, report outages, and sign up for alerts. SCE notes that reported outages may take up to 30 minutes to appear on the outage map, and its outage resources include real-time updates, outage maps, recovery timelines, reporting tools, and alert options.

For scheduled maintenance outages, SCE says it may temporarily shut off power so crews can safely perform maintenance and upgrades. The utility says customers are typically notified at least three days before a scheduled maintenance outage, though timing can change for safety reasons. SCE also says crews may be in the neighborhood on maintenance outage days, with possible road closures or increased traffic, and power may be turned off and on more than once during the work.

For homeowners, the practical checklist is simple: sign up for outage alerts, keep phones and backup batteries charged, know how to report an outage, and plan ahead if your household relies on refrigeration, home medical equipment, garage access, Wi-Fi, or EV charging.
