Torrance Homeowners Can Use the Online Permit Portal

The city’s Building and Safety portal lets residents apply, upload plans, pay fees, and track permit status online.

Torrance homeowners planning a home improvement project may be able to start the process online instead of making a trip to City Hall.

The City of Torrance Building and Safety Division says its online permitting system allows users to submit applications, upload plans, pay fees, and track permit status from anywhere. The city’s permit application page includes categories such as building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, grading, sign, banner, and roofing permits.

For homeowners, this is especially useful before starting projects such as roof work, electrical upgrades, plumbing changes, remodels, structural repairs, or other improvements that may require city review. Even smaller projects can raise questions, so checking the city’s permit tools early can help avoid delays, rework, or problems later.

The city also offers a separate records search portal where residents can look up active building permits, scanned permit records, and property information. That can be helpful for buyers, sellers, real estate agents, contractors, and homeowners trying to understand a property’s permit history.

Before starting work, homeowners should confirm what permit type applies and whether a licensed contractor or owner-builder declaration is needed.
