City Warns Homeowners About Fake Permit Fee Notices |
Torrance property owners are being urged to verify payment requests before sending money. |
The City of Torrance is warning property owners and developers about fake permit fee notices that may look official but are not legitimate.
According to the city, scammers may use publicly available permit information, including property addresses, application numbers, and names of city officials, to create convincing emails or invoices. The messages may ask for payment by wire transfer, peer-to-peer payment services, or cryptocurrency and may pressure recipients by saying delays could affect the permitting process.
The city says residents should not assume a message is real just because it includes official-looking letterhead, logos, or project information. Torrance emails should come from the @TorranceCA.gov domain, and residents can contact the Permit Center directly if they are unsure.
