Trees add shade, curb appeal, and neighborhood character, but Torrance homeowners should be careful before trimming a city street tree.
The City of Torrance says its Street Tree Policy allows homeowners to have the City tree in front of their property trimmed by a city-approved private contractor through a permit process. The city says there is no charge for the permit, but property owners are responsible for contacting the contractor and paying the cost of the work.
That distinction matters. A tree may be near your property, but that does not always mean it can be trimmed like a privately owned backyard tree. Using the proper process helps protect the tree, the homeowner, and the neighborhood streetscape.
The city also maintains a Street Tree Master Plan and approved tree information to help guide urban forestry decisions across Torrance. Before trimming, removing, or heavily cutting back a parkway tree, homeowners should contact the city and confirm the correct process.
