Household Hazardous Waste Needs Special Disposal |
Paint, batteries, chemicals, and similar items should not go in regular trash. |
A home cleanout can uncover old paint, batteries, cleaners, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs, glues, chemicals, and other items that should not go into regular trash. The City of Torrance reminds residents that household hazardous waste must be handled through special disposal streams. These materials can create safety and environmental problems when placed in regular trash, poured down drains, or abandoned outside.
Residents should also be aware of transportation limits. The city’s hazardous collection information notes that it is against the law to transport more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste to collection sites. Waste should be packed carefully to prevent tipping or spilling during transport.
The city also notes that certain items are not accepted through hazardous collection channels, including business waste, ammunition, explosives, radioactive material, biological waste, tires, bulky furniture, refrigerators, washers, dryers, and ovens.
Before cleaning out a garage or storage area, residents should separate hazardous materials and confirm the proper disposal option.
