Torrance Police Plan Motorcycle Safety Enforcement June 10 |
Extra officers will be watching for violations by drivers and motorcycle riders. |
Torrance residents should expect increased motorcycle safety enforcement on Wednesday, June 10.
The Torrance Police Department says extra officers will be on patrol from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. looking specifically for violations made by drivers and motorcycle riders. The department says top crash factors for motorcycles include unsafe speed, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes.
Drivers are reminded to check twice for motorcycles in mirrors and blind spots, use turn signals when changing lanes, avoid following motorcycles too closely, and allow enough space before turning at intersections.
Motorcycle riders are encouraged to wear a DOT-compliant helmet and protective gear, keep lights on during the day, signal early, use reflective materials when possible, and avoid assuming drivers can see them.
The operation is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
