Torrance Pre-Approved ADU Plans Could Help Homeowners Move Faster |
The city’s program is designed to make accessory dwelling unit planning easier for property owners. |
Torrance homeowners interested in adding an accessory dwelling unit may have a useful city resource to explore.
The City of Torrance offers a Pre-Approved Accessory Dwelling Unit program. According to the city, these preapproved plans include architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing designs that comply with city design and safety requirements and are approximately 80% complete for permitting. For homeowners, that can make the early planning process less intimidating. Instead of starting completely from scratch, residents can review designs that were created to support ADU construction under current state and local housing rules.
ADUs can serve several purposes: housing for relatives, more flexible multigenerational living, potential rental income, or a long-term way to make better use of a residential lot.
The program does not mean every property automatically qualifies or that construction is simple. Homeowners still need to review rules, site conditions, costs, permits, utilities, and other requirements. But for anyone seriously considering an ADU, the city’s pre-approved plan page is a smart first stop.
