Torrance Unified families have a new school proposal to watch.
TUSD has posted materials for Torrance Meridian Academy, a proposed dependent charter school of the district. According to the district’s staff report, the petition was submitted on May 28, 2026, and seeks a five-year charter term beginning July 1, 2026, and ending June 30, 2031.
The proposed school would serve students in grades 5–12 through a nonclassroom-based independent-study model. District materials describe the program as a flexible online environment combining academic instruction, project-based learning, and personalized mentorship.
The proposal matters because it could add a different kind of public-school option inside Torrance Unified, especially for students and families looking for more flexible learning formats.
The district’s staff report says the proposal was reviewed for educational, operational, fiscal, governance, admissions, and legal factors. If approved, the district would be responsible for governing and overseeing the charter school during its term.
For parents, this is one to keep an eye on as Torrance Unified continues planning for the 2026–27 school year and beyond.
