Home Projects Can Carry More Than Permit Fees |
Torrance homeowners should know about school, construction, and dwelling-unit fees. |
Before starting a major home project, Torrance homeowners should look beyond the basic permit application.
The City of Torrance Building & Safety fee page lists residential and commercial permit fee schedules, valuation tables, school district fees, and other project-related charges. The posted school district fee for residential construction is $5.17 per square foot. The page also lists other fees, including a $550 Park & Recreation Facilities Tax per dwelling unit, a $1,984 Dwelling Unit Tax or Rehabilitation & Open Space Fee per dwelling unit, and a construction tax of 1.5% of project valuation.
That does not mean every small repair will trigger every fee. But for larger remodels, additions, new dwelling units, or more complex projects, the final cost can include more than materials and labor.
The smart move is simple: check the city fee page early, ask questions before submitting plans, and build city-related costs into the budget before the project is too far along.
