The next great story written in Torrance might begin this Saturday at the North Torrance Library.

Author and illustrator Mia Araujo will lead a youth writing workshop designed for students in grades four through eight. Participants will explore their creativity while learning how to develop and illustrate stories of their own.

The program begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at the North Torrance Library, located at 3604 Artesia Boulevard.

Unlike a traditional author appearance centered primarily on listening, this workshop gives young attendees an active role. Students will be encouraged to generate ideas, shape their own narratives, and consider how words and images work together to create a complete story.

That combination can be particularly valuable for children who enjoy drawing but feel less confident about writing—or young writers who want to learn how illustrations can deepen a reader’s experience. It also gives students a structured creative activity during summer break without making the afternoon feel like another day of school.

The workshop is part of a busy summer calendar at Torrance Public Library, which includes art, music, reading, technology, and hands-on learning programs across its branches. The library calendar lists numerous youth and family programs during the week of July 13 through July 18.
