A hot afternoon can become dangerous quickly, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, and residents without reliable air conditioning.
The City of Torrance lists several public facilities where residents can cool down during periods of excessive heat.
These include:
The Dee Hardison Sports Center offers some of the broadest published hours, including weekday evenings and weekend availability. Library and senior-center schedules vary, so residents should review the current hours before leaving home.
The city recommends calling ahead to confirm that seating is available. Residents can also dial 211 for a broader list of cooling centers throughout Los Angeles County.
Even when visiting a cooling center is unnecessary, basic precautions matter. Drink water regularly, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle, and check on neighbors or relatives who may be vulnerable.
Anyone experiencing confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or other signs of a heat emergency should receive immediate medical attention.
