Some restaurant dishes make an impression before the first bite. The pork cutlets at Tonkatsu Marushichi certainly qualify.

The Tokyo-based restaurant opened its first American location in Torrance, bringing a highly specialized menu built around thick-cut pork coated in panko breadcrumbs and fried until crisp.

Its signature dish is yaki katsudon, which layers the cutlet over softly cooked eggs and rice. Unlike a conventional katsudon in which the fried coating may soften in broth, this version is designed to retain more of its crunch.

Customers can choose among different pork cuts and portion sizes, including loin and tenderloin. The menu has also featured a katsu sandwich served on Japanese milk bread and a pork-cutlet curry. Wasabi, spicy mayonnaise, and the restaurant’s signature sauce allow diners to adjust the flavor to their preference.

The unusually thick pork is cooked slowly at a controlled temperature before receiving its crisp exterior. That process is intended to keep the center tender and juicy rather than drying it out during frying.

This is not a sprawling restaurant designed for a leisurely group dinner. The Torrance location operates primarily as a takeout establishment with only limited counter seating, making it a strong choice for diners willing to bring their meal home or enjoy it somewhere nearby.

Tonkatsu Marushichi is located at 21605 S. Western Avenue, Unit C, in Torrance. Its published schedule lists daily lunch service, with dinner also available Thursday through Saturday. Hours can change, so checking the restaurant’s current social page before making the trip is advisable.
