A group of Torrance teenagers is using summer break to build leadership skills while helping the community through the city’s Youth Volunteer Leadership Training Program.
The program is designed for students entering grades 10 through 12. After completing a week of required training, participants begin volunteer assignments within Torrance Community Services programs.
Their work may include helping children at parks and day camps, assisting with office tasks, supporting youth sports, serving at senior facilities or learning about environmental programs at the Plunge and Madrona Marsh Nature Center.
Participants are required to complete 100 volunteer hours between June 15 and August 7. Along the way, they gain practical experience in communication, teamwork, responsibility and working with people from different age groups and backgrounds.
The program also introduces teenagers to possible future jobs in recreation and community services. Some participants may later qualify for part-time employment opportunities with the city.
For Torrance residents, the program delivers an additional benefit: young people are contributing directly to the parks, programs and services families use throughout the summer.
It is a strong example of Local Love in action—students learning valuable skills while giving their time back to the city they call home. |
