A calm Japanese garden is hiding in plain sight near the center of Torrance.

Pine Wind Japanese Garden, also known as Sho Fu En, is located within the Torrance Cultural Arts Center at 3330 Civic Center Drive. Although many residents have attended a performance at the James Armstrong Theatre or visited the nearby Torrance Art Museum, they may never have stepped inside this quieter corner of the complex.

The garden was designed by Takeo Uesugi, a National Landscape Award-winning landscape architect known for creating Japanese gardens that combine traditional design principles with their surrounding environment.

Inside, visitors will find two waterfalls, a koi pond, stone pathways and carefully arranged landscaping. The setting is frequently used for weddings, photography sessions and other private events, but it can also provide a peaceful backdrop during Cultural Arts Center activities.

The garden includes a small two-tiered amphitheater and can accommodate up to 60 people when additional seating is added.

Because Pine Wind is not operated like a regular walk-in city park, residents should not assume it will be open whenever they arrive. Visitor information describes the garden as reservation-based, and the city recommends contacting the Torrance Cultural Arts Center for access, reservations and current availability.
