The rules governing future home construction and major remodeling projects may become more specific in parts of Torrance.

The city is currently highlighting a public-engagement effort concerning proposed objective development standards for single-family residential properties and homes within the Hillside and Coastal Overlay areas.

Objective standards are measurable requirements rather than broad judgments. They may address characteristics such as building height, setbacks, massing, upper-floor placement, privacy, architectural features and how a project relates to surrounding properties.

These issues can become particularly sensitive in hillside neighborhoods, where a second-story addition or new home may affect views, privacy, sunlight and the apparent scale of development.
