Employees across the Torrance Unified School District are receiving compensation changes as newly negotiated and updated labor agreements take effect.

District negotiation materials describe a series of salary increases across employee schedules, including raises connected to the 2026–2027 school year. The exact terms differ depending on the bargaining unit, employee classification, effective date, and applicable agreement.

For classified employees represented by SEIU Local 99, a ratified agreement included salary increases, a one-time payment, and increased district contributions toward healthcare benefits. The union announced in June that raises and payments were moving toward implementation following membership approval and district action.

Torrance Unified’s negotiation information also references multi-year salary adjustments, including increases that begin July 1, 2026. Updated collective-bargaining agreements and salary schedules have been posted by the district for different employee groups.

The developments matter beyond employee paychecks. Compensation plays a central role in whether school districts can recruit and retain teachers, instructional aides, custodians, food-service employees, office staff, bus and transportation personnel, special-education support workers, and other employees needed to operate schools.

Torrance Unified has faced the same pressures affecting school systems throughout California: rising healthcare and living costs, competition for qualified workers, state-funding uncertainty, and the need to preserve classroom services while maintaining a balanced budget.

The new agreements follow months of public organizing and negotiations. Employees and union representatives repeatedly raised concerns about wages, health-benefit costs, vacancies, and the district’s ability to retain experienced staff.

Not every outstanding labor question is necessarily resolved. Some agreements cover different periods, and negotiations can continue separately with each bargaining unit. Residents reviewing the changes should therefore consult the agreement that applies to the specific employee group rather than assuming that every district worker received identical terms.

Still, the latest compensation actions represent a meaningful development for Torrance Unified’s workforce as the district prepares for the first day of the 2026–2027 school year on August 20.
