Japan’s Warabimochi Kamakura Opens in Torrance |
The international Japanese sweets specialist brings soft warabimochi, roasted soybean flour, matcha, and dessert drinks to Torrance Crossroads. |

A Japanese dessert with centuries of history has found a new home in Torrance.
Warabimochi Kamakura officially opened its Torrance store on July 17 at 24667 Crenshaw Boulevard, Suite A, inside Torrance Crossroads. The location is listed on the company’s official international store directory.
Warabimochi differs noticeably from the colorful, ice-cream-filled mochi commonly found in American grocery stores.
Traditional warabimochi is a soft, delicate confection made to produce a smooth, stretchy, almost melting texture. It is commonly coated in roasted soybean flour, known as kinako, and served with a dark brown-sugar syrup.
Kamakura has built its concept around its signature version, which the company presents in several flavors and preparations. Torrance customers can expect options featuring kinako, matcha, and black sesame, along with toppings and syrups that add sweetness and contrast.
The shop also serves warabimochi drinks, blending small pieces of the confection into beverages made with ingredients such as matcha and coffee. The company says its original coffee blend was developed specifically to complement the flavor of its warabimochi.
The dessert is best approached with different expectations than ordinary mochi. Instead of a chewy rice-flour shell, warabimochi is prized for being exceptionally soft, silky, and fragile.
That freshness also means it is not designed for long storage. The company advises that its preservative-free Kamakura Warabimochi should be consumed by the day after purchase.
The Torrance opening adds another internationally recognized Japanese food brand to a city already known for one of Southern California’s strongest concentrations of Japanese restaurants, markets, bakeries, and specialty shops.
For first-time visitors, the classic kinako version offers the clearest introduction. Matcha lovers may prefer one of the green-tea variations or drinks.
