The Torrance City Council will not hold a regular meeting on July 28 or August 4.

The council’s next scheduled regular session is Tuesday, August 11, with the public meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. A closed session may begin earlier at 5 p.m. when legally permitted matters require private council discussion.

Weeks without a regular council meeting are often described as dark nights. They are built into the annual council calendar and can occur around holidays, election transitions, conferences, and summer scheduling periods.

A dark night does not mean City Hall stops operating. Departments continue conducting daily business, preparing staff reports, responding to residents, processing permits, administering contracts, and developing items for future meetings.

The pause does mean that residents should not expect ordinary council votes during those weeks unless the City schedules a special meeting.

Agendas are generally released closer to the meeting date. Once published, the August 11 agenda will show the specific contracts, ordinances, public hearings, appointments, reports, and policy matters scheduled for council consideration.

Residents can monitor the City’s meeting portal, submit written comments, attend the meeting in person, or participate remotely by telephone.

The council calendar also lists a closed-session-only meeting on August 18 and another regular meeting on August 25. Closed sessions are limited by California law to specific subjects, including certain lawsuits, labor negotiations, personnel matters, and real-estate negotiations.

The August 25 meeting is also expected to include interviews and the appointment of a new District 4 councilmember, a matter already covered elsewhere in this issue.

Residents following a particular local concern should use the summer break to collect documentation, contact council offices, and prepare comments before the next agenda appears.
