Residents in and around Torrance may hear the Refinery Community Alert Sirens on Wednesday, August 5, at approximately 11:30 a.m.

The regularly scheduled test occurs on the first Wednesday of each month and is intended to confirm that the community warning system remains operational. The entire test should last no longer than five minutes.

The sequence begins with one minute of all-clear chimes, followed by a two-minute siren tone and another set of all-clear chimes. Because the siren is designed to travel farther than the chimes, some residents may hear only portions of the test.

No action is required during Wednesday’s scheduled activation.

During an actual emergency, residents who hear the sirens should remember the city’s instructions: Shelter. Shut. Listen. Go indoors, close doors, windows and vents, and listen for official information. The city uses AM 1620 CitiSOUNDS as one source for emergency instructions.

Residents should avoid calling 911 merely to ask about the scheduled test. Emergency lines should remain available for active police, fire and medical situations.
