Residents can take an active role in protecting one of Torrance’s most important natural areas during a Habitat Restoration session at Madrona Marsh Preserve.

The volunteer project will be held on Saturday, August 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will help maintain the preserve by removing weeds, controlling non-native plants and planting native vegetation where needed.

Invasive plants can crowd out native species and alter the habitat used by birds, insects and other wildlife. Regular restoration work helps preserve the ecological balance of the marsh while supporting its value as a community nature and education resource.

Volunteers must complete the required short-term volunteer registration before participating. Children ages 14 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Because the work takes place outdoors and may involve soil, plants and gardening tools, volunteers should wear sturdy closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Sun protection, work gloves and drinking water may also be useful.

The session provides a practical way for residents to contribute several hours of service while learning more about local conservation. It may also be a good opportunity for families, students and community groups seeking meaningful volunteer work close to home.
