Meet a Navy Fighter Pilot Who Helped Make Aviation History |
Mike Rabens takes Torrance inside the pioneering X-47B aircraft carrier program |

The Western Museum of Flight is offering Torrance residents a fascinating look at one of the most ambitious advances in modern naval aviation.
On Saturday, August 15, from 11 a.m. to noon, the museum’s Celebrity Lecture Series will feature Mike Rabens, a U.S. Navy fighter pilot whose experience contributed to the groundbreaking X-47B program.
The X-47B was created to develop, test and demonstrate whether a fighter-sized autonomous aircraft could successfully operate from an aircraft carrier—including taking off and landing in one of aviation’s most demanding environments.
Rabens brings both fighter-pilot experience and detailed knowledge of shipboard aircraft operations to the discussion.
The lecture takes place at the Western Museum of Flight, 3315 Airport Drive in Torrance. The City’s event listing gives admission for non-members as $15.
For aviation enthusiasts—and anyone fascinated by how autonomous flight moved from concept to an actual carrier deck—this could be one of the most interesting hours in Torrance this weekend.
