Torrance Is Turning Ordinary Utility Boxes Into Street Art |
Some of the city’s most unexpected artwork is hiding beside the road |

Not every piece of art in Torrance hangs inside a museum.
Some of it is hiding in plain sight at intersections around the city.
Through its Utility Box Public Art Program, Torrance is using otherwise ordinary utility equipment as canvases for artwork, placing local creativity directly into the streetscape.
The idea is simple: take infrastructure most people barely notice and turn it into something worth looking at.
The City says the program was created to showcase artists, beautify streets and bring art into unexpected places. Utility boxes involved in the program are located throughout Torrance, including along major thoroughfares where they can be seen by pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
The artwork is reproduced on durable vinyl wrapping with protective treatment designed to withstand sunlight and other environmental exposure.
That means discovering Torrance art does not necessarily require planning a museum visit.
Sometimes it simply requires paying attention at the next corner. Once you begin noticing these boxes, an everyday drive or neighborhood walk can become a miniature public-art hunt—and that may be the best part of this Hidden Gem.
