A park carrying the name Torrance Park might sound like one of the city’s most obvious destinations.

Oddly enough, it is one of the easier ones to overlook.

Located at 2001 Santa Fe Avenue, the approximately 10-acre park has playground equipment, picnic facilities, basketball, baseball and horseshoe areas—but it also contains something less common: an outdoor amphitheater.

Its history makes the place even more interesting.

Discover Torrance identifies Torrance Park as the city’s first public park, dedicated in 1934.

Then there is its baseball connection.

The park’s lighted field is officially named Jason Kendall Field. The Kendall family has deep Torrance baseball roots: Fred Kendall attended Torrance High School and played in Major League Baseball, and his son Jason Kendall later became a three-time MLB All-Star catcher. The City lists Jason Kendall Field among Torrance’s officially named public facilities.

That gives this otherwise unassuming neighborhood park layers many residents may never notice.

You can come for a picnic or playground visit and leave having discovered a small piece of Torrance civic and baseball history.
