Look Up Thursday Night — Torrance Gets a Partial Lunar Eclipse |
The Moon Will Be Deep in Earth’s Shadow Just After 9 P.M. |

Thursday night could deliver one of the most memorable sights of the summer—and you won’t need a ticket to see it.
A partial lunar eclipse will be visible from Torrance on Thursday, August 27, as the moon moves through Earth’s shadow.
The moon rises locally at approximately 7:17 p.m., with the partial phase becoming visible shortly afterward. Maximum eclipse is expected at about 9:12 p.m., when a substantial portion of the moon will be darkened by Earth’s shadow.
The visible eclipse continues into the night and ends shortly after midnight on Friday, August 28.
Unlike a solar eclipse, no special eye protection is needed to watch a lunar eclipse. Residents simply need a reasonably unobstructed view toward the eastern and southeastern sky as the moon rises.
Because the moon will initially be low on the horizon, locations with a clear view toward the east should offer the best early view.
And there’s another reason this eclipse could be especially dramatic: during a lunar eclipse, the shadowed portion of the moon can take on shades of deep orange or red as sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere.
Weather permitting, Torrance residents should have a front-row seat.
When: Thursday, August 27, beginning around 7:17 p.m.
