You don't have to join a league to enjoy one of Torrance's most entertaining sports facilities.

Torrance Batting Cages, located at Wilson Park, lets residents walk in, grab a bat and test their swing against a variety of pitching machines.

The facility has eight baseball machines, slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball machines, two netted pitching tunnels and two turf sports fields.

But the story behind it makes this place even more interesting.

The Tyler family's batting-cage business dates back to 1978, when it operated at Alpine Village in Carson. After nearly three decades there, the family relocated the operation to Torrance in 2008.

That means the experience has a distinctly old-school South Bay feel—part sports practice, part family outing and part throwback recreation.

It's also inexpensive to try. The facility currently advertises nine pitches for $1, while longer timed sessions are available for players who want more practice.

And serious players can go further. Private instruction is offered in hitting, pitching, catching and fielding.

Whether you're helping a child practice, reliving Little League memories or simply wondering whether you can still hit a fastball, this is one Torrance outing that doesn't require much planning.

Where: 2300 Jefferson St., at Wilson Park
Hours: Weekdays 2–10 p.m.; weekends 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
