Torrance is expected to have a full City Council again by the end of Tuesday night.

The City Council is scheduled to interview candidates and appoint a new representative for District 4 during its Tuesday, August 25 meeting.

The seat became vacant earlier this summer, prompting the City to open an application process for residents interested in completing the remainder of the term.

Applicants were required to be at least 18 years old, registered voters and residents of District 4 at the time of appointment. They must also continue living within the district while serving.

The application period closed on August 13.

This week brings the consequential part of the process.

According to the City's official election information, Councilmembers will interview the applicants individually, giving each candidate an opportunity to present their qualifications and discuss why they want to serve.

The appointment is scheduled to occur during the regular Council meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, or as soon afterward as the Council's agenda permits.

This Isn't a Short-Term Appointment

Whoever gets the seat will have a meaningful amount of time in office.

The appointee's term runs from August 25, 2026 until the results of Torrance's March 7, 2028 municipal election are certified and the newly elected officials are installed.

That means the new Councilmember will participate in decisions involving development, public safety, transportation, housing, spending and other citywide issues for roughly a year and a half.

District 4 covers a portion of central and eastern Torrance, but the new member's votes will affect residents throughout the city.

The Council meeting begins with closed session at 5 p.m., followed by the regular public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Residents can attend at City Hall or watch the meeting online through Torrance CitiCABLE.

We've previously told readers that Torrance was accepting applications for this seat.

Tuesday is when that process is expected to produce an actual Councilmember.

When: Tuesday, August 25, 6:30 p.m.
Where: LeRoy J. Jackson Council Chamber, 3031 Torrance Blvd.
