Torrance Volunteers Quietly Help Seniors Find the Services They Need |
Focal Point on Aging connects residents with housing, transportation, meals and more |

One of Torrance’s quieter community programs can become extremely important when a family suddenly needs help.
Focal Point on Aging, presented by the Torrance Commission on Aging in partnership with the Community Services Department, helps older adults, caregivers and families locate services throughout the community.
The program is staffed by trained volunteers who answer calls, listen to what a resident needs and help c onnect that person with an appropriate organization or service. Those referrals can include transportation, housing assistance, Meals on Wheels, healthcare, companion care, Medicare and HMO information, and social or legal services.
That may sound simple, but finding the right agency can be one of the hardest parts of asking for help — particularly when someone is dealing with a sudden health issue, caring for a spouse or trying to remain independent at home.
Focal Point acts as a local starting place rather than requiring residents to figure out the maze on their own.
Phone assistance is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon at 310-320-1300.
It is exactly the kind of small, practical Torrance resource that deserves more attention.
