Torrance Has a New District 4 Councilmember |
Linda Barnett was appointed unanimously to fill the seat vacated by Mayor Sharon Kalani |

Torrance has filled the vacant District 4 City Council seat.
At its August 25 meeting, the Council voted 6-0 to appoint Linda Barnett as the city’s newest councilmember.
Barnett fills the seat previously held by Sharon Kalani, who left District 4 after being elected mayor and assuming that office on July 14.
The City had opened an application process for District 4 residents interested in completing the unexpired term. Applicants were required to live in the district, be at least 18 and be registered voters there.
After interviewing the candidates, the Council selected Barnett unanimously.
She was sworn in following the vote.
Barnett will serve until the results of Torrance’s regular municipal election scheduled for March 7, 2028 are certified and newly elected officials are installed.
District 4 includes Old Torrance, Wilson Park, Torrance Park, the Southeast Library area and portions of the city’s industrial and refinery districts.
For residents there, the appointment restores a full-time representative to the Council after the vacancy created by Kalani’s move to the mayor’s office.
