Torrance Schools Hit a Breaking Point in the Heat |
Most TUSD campuses still lack air conditioning, and last week’s heat made the problem impossible to ignore. |

Record heat and humidity pushed conditions inside some Torrance Unified classrooms to an uncomfortable level last week, drawing attention to a long-standing infrastructure problem: roughly 75% of district schools do not have air conditioning.
TUSD responded with extra fans, cooling areas, iced water and by moving students into air-conditioned rooms where possible. Parents were also told they could pick children up early without an attendance penalty.
The larger challenge is cost. District officials told FOX 11 that installing air conditioning and the infrastructure needed to support it across all campuses could exceed $520 million. With extreme heat becoming a recurring school-year issue, the question of how Torrance cools its classrooms is likely to remain on the community agenda.
