Torrance residents now have a direct say in one of the city’s more meaningful naming decisions.

The City is seeking feedback on three options for honoring Ted T. Tanouye, the Torrance High graduate and World War II soldier whose Distinguished Service Cross was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor.

Option 1 would rename Columbia Park as Ted T. Tanouye Park, with an estimated cost of $10,000 to $30,000.

Option 2 is considerably more ambitious. It would create a new Ted T. Tanouye Memorial Park around the existing memorial near Torrance High School, rename a section of El Prado Avenue as Ted T. Tanouye Memorial Drive, rename part of Manuel Avenue as Go for Broke Way, and add a monument honoring the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The estimated cost ranges from $850,000 to $1.5 million.

Option 3 would leave Columbia Park and the existing memorial area unchanged.

The City has posted background information and a public survey so residents can review the alternatives before future Council consideration.
