Thinking About Solar? Some Torrance Projects Can Get Automated Permits |
Qualifying rooftop systems can move through an accelerated online approval process. |

For some Torrance homeowners, getting a rooftop solar permit can now be considerably faster.
The City offers an automated online permitting path for photovoltaic systems that meet a detailed list of technical requirements. Among other conditions, qualifying projects generally must involve an existing permitted residence, use standard flat-plate solar modules and meet specific electrical and system-size limits.
The automated process is intended to streamline straightforward installations without requiring the same manual plan review used for more complicated projects.
Not every house or solar design will qualify. Systems involving unusual mounting arrangements, structural changes, trenching or certain hillside conditions may still need regular review.
Even when automated approval is not available, solar applications can still be submitted through Torrance’s online permit system.
For homeowners comparing solar bids, it may be worth asking the installer whether the proposed system qualifies for Torrance’s automated permit process before work begins.
