Torrance Ends Its Coyote Trapping Program |

Torrance is changing how it responds to urban coyotes.
The city has ended its trap-and-kill program and is shifting toward a coexistence-based approach that emphasizes resident education, hazing, securing food sources, protecting pets, and reducing the conditions that draw coyotes into neighborhoods.
The City’s existing coyote guidance already encourages residents to keep pets indoors when possible, use leashes no longer than six feet, eliminate brush and other shelter areas, install motion-sensitive lighting, and haze coyotes that become too comfortable around people.
Patch, citing recent local reporting, says the city is redirecting roughly $80,000 away from trapping and toward education and coexistence strategies.
For residents, the practical takeaway is that neighborhood prevention will play a larger role going forward. Removing pet food, unsecured trash and other attractants may become even more important as Torrance moves away from routine trapping.
