A major Torrance school-safety initiative is getting a substantial funding boost.

At its September 15 meeting, the City Council considered amendments to Metro Measure M funding agreements that would add $6.6 million to the Torrance School Safety and Accessibility Program, bringing the total program budget to $13.785 million.

The program is aimed at improving safety and accessibility around Torrance schools through transportation and street-infrastructure improvements.

At the same meeting, the City also moved forward with construction work specifically affecting Anza Elementary and Torrance Elementary. The proposed public-works agreement totaled approximately $2.67 million, with an additional 15% contingency of about $401,000. The contract period runs through September 2028.

The scale of the funding matters because school-access projects often involve more than simply repainting crosswalks. Depending on the location and phase, improvements can include pedestrian access, roadway changes, accessibility upgrades and other infrastructure designed to make walking, bicycling and driving near campuses safer.

For Torrance families, this is one of those projects whose impact may become most noticeable not in a single ribbon cutting, but in the daily trip to and from school.
