Something larger than a handful of startup announcements is happening in Torrance.

The city is increasingly becoming part of a tightly concentrated Southern California hard-tech corridor, where aerospace, defense, robotics, satellite infrastructure and advanced manufacturing companies are competing for industrial space and specialized workers.

Recent regional reporting points to Torrance, El Segundo, Hawthorne and Long Beach as major beneficiaries of that shift. The Los Angeles Times reported this week that aerospace and hard-tech companies continue to choose Southern California because of its concentration of skilled labor, suppliers and industrial infrastructure.

Torrance already has a substantial roster of companies operating in those sectors. City economic-development materials identify firms including Castelion, Northwood Space, FlightWave, Heart Aerospace, AnySignal, GITAI and Antares alongside established manufacturers such as Moog, Honeywell and Hadrian.

The physical city is changing along with them.

The former Toyota headquarters property, for example, has been redeveloped into the nearly 972,000-square-foot Torrance Commerce Center, with companies including Hadrian, Alpine Electronics and AIT occupying space there.

Industry analysts say demand from advanced-manufacturing and defense users across the South Bay has become unusually strong, transforming warehouse markets that were once dominated primarily by logistics companies.

For Torrance residents, the bigger story is no longer simply that another startup moved into town. It is that the city appears to be developing an increasingly recognizable economic identity around high-value manufacturing and engineering — one that could influence local jobs, commercial real estate and redevelopment for years.
