A Simple Pair of Shoes Becomes Something Much Bigger |
A South Bay nonprofit is turning donated socks and footwear into comfort, dignity and protection for people in need. |

Most of us don’t think twice about putting on a pair of shoes.
For someone without safe, properly fitting footwear, it can be a very different story.
Blessings for Your Soles, a South Bay nonprofit, provides socks and shoes to people experiencing homelessness, veterans, children in hospitals and long-term pediatric care, seniors and at-risk youth.
The organization recently held its third annual gala in Torrance, its largest fundraiser of the year, bringing supporters together to help fund that work.
The mission grew from founder Janet Buettner’s experience seeing people living on the streets with damaged, swollen and poorly protected feet. From there, the idea expanded into helping several vulnerable populations for whom proper footwear can mean greater comfort, safety and dignity.
Residents can help by donating, volunteering or organizing sock and shoe drives.
It is a simple mission with an unusually tangible result:
someone leaves with safer feet and a little more dignity than they had before.
