If you have been waiting to clear out old electronics or confidential paperwork, Saturday is the day — but arriving early would be smart.

Torrance Public Works is holding its free E-Waste Recycling and Paper Shredding event Saturday, September 26, from 8 a.m. to noon at the City Hall employee parking lot near the courthouse off Maple Avenue.

There are several rules worth knowing before loading the car.

Paper shredding is limited to three boxes or bags per vehicle, and the event is available only to Torrance residents. Bring identification or a utility bill as proof of residency.

Electronics such as televisions, monitors, cell phones and small appliances are accepted.

But hazardous waste is not. That includes paint, batteries, medications, fluorescent bulbs, pesticides, cleaners and similar chemicals.

Most importantly, Public Works says the event is first-come, first-served and will end when the trucks reach capacity, even if that happens before noon.

So this is one Saturday errand where earlier really may be better.
