West High Students Give Younger Kids a Helping Hand |

Some of the best examples of Local Love do not involve giant fundraisers or large crowds.
Sometimes they involve just a few students showing up when someone needs help.
Members of West High School’s California Scholarship Federation recently volunteered at nearby Victor Elementary School, where students helped tutor younger children while a teacher met with their parents.
The September 24 volunteer opportunity was organized through West High CSF, which encourages academically strong students to pair scholarship with community service.
Only three volunteers were needed for this particular assignment, which makes the story easy to overlook.
But that is also what makes it worth highlighting.
For an elementary student, an hour of one-on-one attention from an older student can make homework less intimidating. For the high school volunteers, it offers an opportunity to practice patience, leadership and responsibility outside the classroom.
West High CSF regularly connects students with service opportunities around the community, reinforcing the organization's broader idea of being “scholars for service.”
It is a simple model: students who are doing well academically turning around and helping the students coming behind them.
That is Local Love at its most straightforward.
