One of Torrance’s Most Impressive Art Collections Is Hidden Inside an Office Building |
Chen Art Gallery houses a major private collection of Chinese art — and admission is free |

This may be one of the best examples of a true hidden gem in Torrance because you could drive right past it and never guess what is inside.
Chen Art Gallery is located inside the Torrance headquarters of Sunrider International and showcases the personal art collection of company founder Dr. Tei Fu Chen.
The City of Torrance describes the gallery as a private, nonprofit museum containing one of the more significant private collections of Chinese art in the United States.
The collection was assembled over decades and includes works reflecting a wide range of Chinese artistic traditions and historical periods.
Here is the unusual part: admission is free, but the gallery is not designed for casual walk-in traffic.
Visits are generally handled through scheduled, docent-led tours, which is one reason many local residents may not realize the museum exists. Chen Art Gallery
The gallery is at 1625 Abalone Avenue, not far from Old Torrance.
That makes it an interesting choice for residents who enjoy museums but want something completely different from a large public institution.
Instead of crowds and sprawling galleries, this is a more intimate experience built around a collection most people would never expect to find inside a Torrance corporate headquarters.
