TUSD Opens Substitute Work to Current Student Teachers |
Eligible student teachers can earn $175 per day while completing their teaching programs. |

Torrance Unified is creating an opportunity for aspiring teachers to gain paid classroom experience before completing their university teaching programs.
The district posted a 2026–27 substitute-teacher opening specifically for current TUSD student teachers, with compensation listed at $175 per day.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and provide approval from three people involved in their training: their master teacher, school principal and university supervisor.
The university must also permit substitute teaching while the candidate is completing student teaching.
TUSD operates 34 schools and serves more than 22,000 students, so substitute staffing remains an important part of keeping classrooms operating when regular teachers are unavailable.
The application deadline is October 31 at 5 p.m.
While this opening applies to a specific group of prospective teachers rather than the general public, it provides local student teachers with an unusual opportunity to earn income and gain additional classroom experience while completing their preparation for a teaching career.
