Torrance Unified School District is now involved in a major federal legal battle against some of the biggest names in social media and technology.

The district filed suit September 9 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against companies connected with Meta, Instagram, TikTok, Snap, Google and YouTube.

Federal court records classify the case as a product-liability action. The defendants include Meta Platforms and several affiliated Facebook and Instagram entities, ByteDance and TikTok companies, Snap Inc., Google, Alphabet and YouTube.

The case gained fresh activity on October 2, when court records show executed summonses were returned, indicating that the litigation is continuing to move through the federal process.

The filing places Torrance Unified inside a much broader national dispute over the impact of social-media products on children and school systems.

For Torrance residents, however, this is more than a national technology story. Their local school district has formally entered litigation against some of the world's largest corporations.

The case is still at an early stage, and the filing represents TUSD's allegations rather than a court finding against any of the defendants.
