Torrance-South Bay YMCA Celebrates the Volunteers Who Keep It Moving |
The local Y marked 79 years of recognizing the people who quietly give their time to the community. |

For nearly eight decades, the Torrance-South Bay YMCA has taken time to recognize people whose community contributions often happen away from the spotlight.
The local Y held its 79th Annual Volunteer & Awards Celebration Dinner on October 1 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Torrance. The evening was dedicated to the volunteers who help make YMCA programs possible throughout the community.
Those volunteers serve in roles ranging from youth sports and children's activities to community programs and other hands-on support.
The YMCA says its youth sports programs, for example, depend heavily on volunteer coaches and assistants who not only teach the fundamentals of basketball, volleyball, soccer, flag football and other sports, but also help young participants develop confidence, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Honda supported this year's celebration as the event's Champion Sponsor, adding another Torrance connection to the annual recognition.
Big community programs tend to get the attention.
But behind many of them are local residents giving up evenings, weekends and hours that nobody sees.
That is exactly the kind of work Local Love was created to recognize.
