The remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel swept through Southern California over the October 10–11 weekend, bringing powerful surf, coastal flooding, and significant damage to parts of the coastline.

By Monday, October 12, forecasters reported that the worst of the storm had passed, but elevated tides and hazardous coastal conditions were expected to continue into Tuesday.

Long Beach Suffers Significant Coastal Damage

Some of the most serious damage occurred along the Long Beach Peninsula, where unusually powerful waves struck oceanfront homes and damaged sections of the historic wooden boardwalk.

According to reporting from the San Francisco Chronicle, eight homes were declared unsafe and another sustained moderate damage.

Local authorities maintained evacuation restrictions in vulnerable locations as continuing surf and erosion posed additional risks.

For some homeowners, the immediate concern was whether damaged buildings could withstand further wave activity.

Newport Beach Takes Emergency Precautions

Farther south, Newport Beach faced flooding concerns along the Balboa Peninsula.

City crews worked to reinforce protective sand berms, and beach access restrictions were implemented during the storm.

The emergency preparations helped prevent some of the more extensive damage originally feared.

Despite the improvement in overall weather conditions, officials continued watching high tides and the possibility of additional coastal erosion.

What About Torrance and the South Bay?

Although severe storm damage specifically within Torrance had not been independently confirmed as of October 12, the event affected the broader coastal region.

Residents visiting Torrance Beach, Redondo Beach, or other South Bay coastal destinations should remain aware of changing ocean conditions, posted warnings, and lifeguard instructions.

Powerful surf can remain dangerous even after rainfall and strong winds have diminished.

A Reminder of Coastal Vulnerability

The storm also drew attention to the challenges facing Southern California's coastline, including erosion, unusually warm ocean temperatures, and the effects of elevated sea levels.

The combination of large waves and high tides can damage coastal infrastructure even when a tropical system weakens before reaching land.

For South Bay communities, Rachel serves as another reminder that ocean conditions deserve attention long after the clouds begin to clear.
