Some of Torrance's most encouraging community stories begin with young people volunteering their time.

At West Torrance High School, students involved in the school's California Scholarship Federation (CSF) have opportunities to support local organizations and neighborhood schools.

This October, the group's published volunteer calendar includes opportunities at Anza Elementary School and Towers Elementary School, where students can help make seasonal celebrations possible for younger children and their families.

Helping Anza Elementary Celebrate Halloween

On Friday, October 23, Anza Elementary School will hold its annual Trunk or Treat celebration.

West High's CSF has posted volunteer opportunities for students interested in helping with event preparation, cleanup, and activity booths.

The available assignments are divided into afternoon and evening shifts, with volunteers helping support the event's activities.

For younger students, school celebrations can create lasting memories. Behind those festivities, however, are volunteers who help with countless practical details.

Student participation can make those celebrations easier for organizers and more enjoyable for families.

Bringing Fall Fun to Towers Elementary

The following day, Saturday, October 24, Towers Elementary School will hold its Harvest Festival.

West High CSF has also posted volunteer opportunities for this event, with students assisting in setup, cleanup, and the operation of festival booths.

An additional opportunity to help prepare the school's haunted house is listed for Friday, October 23.

These activities provide a practical introduction to community service while giving high school students an opportunity to support children at nearby elementary schools.

More Than Volunteer Hours

The California Scholarship Federation is an academic honor organization that encourages scholarship and service.

For participating West High students, volunteering can provide opportunities to develop responsibility, communication, teamwork, and leadership.

But the benefits extend beyond personal development.

When students contribute their time to neighborhood schools, they also strengthen connections among different age groups within the community.

Elementary school children get to see older students serving as positive examples, while high school volunteers gain experience supporting the people and institutions around them.

How Students Can Participate

West High's CSF volunteer calendar lists the following opportunities:

  • October 23: Anza Elementary Trunk or Treat, 21400 Ellinwood Drive
  • October 23: Towers Elementary Haunted House Setup, 5600 Towers Street
  • October 24: Towers Elementary Harvest Festival, 5600 Towers Street

The published listings include volunteer limits, designated shifts, and registration instructions.

Students interested in participating should review eligibility requirements and current openings through West High CSF. These are organized student volunteer opportunities, not unrestricted public volunteer registration.

A Great Example of Torrance Community Spirit

It's easy to overlook the contributions young volunteers make to everyday community life.

Yet behind many school festivals, neighborhood celebrations, and special activities are people giving their time simply because they want to help.

West High's student volunteers are showing that making a difference doesn't require waiting until adulthood.

Sometimes, community leadership begins with showing up, lending a hand, and helping someone else have a wonderful day.
