Home blood pressure monitors have become common tools for people managing hypertension.

But owning a monitor doesn't guarantee accurate results.

According to the American Heart Association, proper technique, a correctly sized cuff, and a validated upper-arm monitor are essential for dependable home blood pressure measurements.

Home monitoring can help healthcare professionals evaluate blood pressure patterns and treatment effectiveness. It does not replace regular medical appointments.

Mistake 1: Measuring Too Soon After Coffee or Exercise

Caffeine, smoking, and exercise can temporarily affect blood pressure.

The American Heart Association recommends avoiding these activities for at least 30 minutes before taking a reading.

Emptying your bladder beforehand is also recommended.

Mistake 2: Skipping the Rest Period

Sit quietly for at least five minutes before measuring.

Avoid talking, texting, or checking your phone during the measurement.

The goal is to capture a reading while your body is resting.

Mistake 3: Sitting Incorrectly

Keep your back supported, feet flat on the floor, and legs uncrossed.

Support your arm at heart level on a table or other stable surface.

Poor positioning can affect the result.

Mistake 4: Using the Wrong Cuff

The American Heart Association recommends a validated automatic upper-arm monitor.

Cuff size matters. A cuff that is too small or too large may produce inaccurate results.

Wrist and finger devices are generally less reliable.

Consider bringing your monitor to a medical appointment so its accuracy and your technique can be checked.

Mistake 5: Relying on One Reading

Blood pressure naturally fluctuates throughout the day.

The American Heart Association recommends taking two measurements approximately one minute apart and recording the results.

Follow your healthcare professional's instructions regarding how frequently to monitor and when to share your readings.

When a Reading Needs Urgent Attention

If blood pressure exceeds 180 systolic and/or 120 diastolic, wait at least one minute and measure again.

If it remains that high, contact a healthcare professional immediately.

If a reading is that high and you also experience chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, changes in vision, difficulty speaking, or other concerning symptoms, call 911.

Never stop or change prescribed blood pressure medication based solely on home readings without medical guidance.

Better Measurements, Better Conversations

The value of home blood pressure monitoring comes from collecting accurate information over time.

For Torrance residents managing hypertension, a few adjustments to their daily monitoring routine can make those measurements more useful during medical appointments.
