Torrance residents visiting certain municipal facilities Thursday morning should be prepared for brief interruptions as city employees participate in a statewide earthquake preparedness exercise.

The Great California ShakeOut takes place Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 10:15 a.m.

The annual drill encourages people to practice the protective actions that can reduce injuries when an earthquake strikes.

Which Torrance Facilities Are Participating?

The City of Torrance has confirmed evacuation exercises at five locations:

City Hall
West Annex
East Annex
Katy Geissert Civic Center Library
Mary K. Giordano Regional Transit Center

Visitors at these locations may be asked to evacuate during the exercise.

The city warns that brief service disruptions may occur.

If you have an appointment or need assistance at one of these facilities, allow some flexibility around the 10:15 a.m. drill.

What Should Residents Do During an Earthquake?

The primary protective action recommended during earthquake shaking is Drop, Cover, and Hold On.

Drop to your hands and knees, take cover beneath a sturdy desk or table when possible, and hold on until the shaking stops.

If suitable furniture is unavailable, protect your head and neck and move away from windows or objects that could fall.

People who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices should follow appropriate protective guidance, which may include locking wheels and protecting the head and neck.

Why Does the City Conduct Evacuation Exercises?

Protecting yourself during earthquake shaking and evacuating a building afterward are different activities.

The ShakeOut gives employees and visitors an opportunity to practice emergency procedures before a real disaster.

Building evacuations may be appropriate after shaking has stopped when directed by safety personnel.

During Thursday's exercise, visitors should follow instructions from city employees.

How Can You Participate at Home?

Residents can use the drill to practice earthquake safety wherever they happen to be.

It's also an opportunity to review emergency supplies, family communication plans, and safe locations inside the home.

You don't need to visit a city facility to participate.

Important: Thursday's activity is a planned exercise, not an actual earthquake emergency.
