A Cleaner Direction for Torrance Aviation

Torrance Municipal Airport, also known as Zamperini Field, is taking an important step toward making unleaded aviation fuel more accessible to local pilots and flight schools.

The City of Torrance announced that it would join Torrance Aerofuel and Sling Pilot Academy on October 13, 2026, to recognize a new fuel partnership, with plans for the first aircraft fueling demonstration.

The announcement, issued October 12, describes the initiative as an effort to advance aviation innovation, environmental responsibility, and the future of airport operations.

Why Unleaded Aviation Fuel Matters

Unlike automobiles, which transitioned away from leaded gasoline decades ago, many piston-engine aircraft still use aviation gasoline containing lead.

Lead exposure is a public-health concern, making the aviation industry's transition to suitable unleaded alternatives particularly relevant to neighborhoods surrounding general aviation airports.

Expanding access to unleaded fuel is an important part of that transition. However, not every aircraft can use every alternative fuel, so aircraft compatibility and applicable aviation approvals remain essential.

A Partnership With Local Impact

The city's announcement identified Torrance Aerofuel and Sling Pilot Academy as partners in expanding fuel availability at Zamperini Field.

Mayor Sharon Kalani was scheduled to participate in the October 13 event, which included plans for a ceremonial signing and an aircraft fueling demonstration.

The announcement did not establish that all aircraft at Torrance Airport could immediately switch to unleaded fuel or that leaded gasoline would disappear from the airport.

What Happens Next?

The important question is how widely unleaded aviation fuel becomes available and how many locally based aircraft can use it.

For nearby residents, continued progress could ultimately mean a reduction in one source of environmental lead emissions. For pilots and airport businesses, it introduces additional fuel options as the broader aviation industry moves toward alternatives.

The October milestone is one step, not the completion of the transition. But it is a meaningful development for the future of Torrance Airport.
