Young Volunteers Making a Difference

While families enjoy Halloween celebrations across Torrance, some local high school students are helping make those experiences possible.

Members of West High School's California Scholarship Federation (CSF) are organizing volunteer support for activities at Anza Elementary School and Towers Elementary School this October.

Their volunteer calendar includes assisting with a Trunk-or-Treat celebration, preparing a haunted house, and supporting a school harvest festival.

It's a reminder that community involvement doesn't require years of experience. Sometimes, it starts with students willing to give a few hours of their time.

Helping Anza Elementary Celebrate Halloween

On Friday, October 23, West High CSF volunteers are scheduled to assist with Anza Elementary School's annual Trunk-or-Treat celebration.

The school is located at 21400 Ellinwood Drive in Torrance.

Volunteer responsibilities include:

  • Helping prepare the event space.
  • Assisting with activity booths.
  • Supporting activities during the celebration.
  • Cleaning up afterward.

The student organization lists two volunteer shifts, with opportunities for participants to contribute during the afternoon or evening.

Supporting the Towers Harvest Festival

West High volunteers are also scheduled to help Towers Elementary School prepare for its seasonal celebration.

On Friday, October 23, students can assist with setting up a haunted house in the school cafeteria.

Additional volunteer opportunities are scheduled for Saturday, October 24, during the school's Harvest Festival.

The volunteer assignments include setting up, running activity booths, and helping with cleanup.

These are the kinds of behind-the-scenes responsibilities that help school activities run smoothly.

Why Student Volunteering Matters

Volunteering can provide young people with opportunities to develop communication, teamwork, responsibility, and leadership skills.

It also gives them a chance to connect with people outside their immediate classroom or social circle.

For elementary schools, volunteer assistance can make a meaningful difference by helping staff and parent organizers carry out community activities.

For high school students, the experience offers a chance to contribute directly to their hometown.

More Than Community Service Hours

West High's CSF program maintains an organized volunteer calendar, identifies student event chairs, and coordinates service opportunities throughout the community.

Although participants can earn service points through these activities, the broader value extends beyond fulfilling organizational requirements.

Students are learning that their time and effort can make a difference for younger children, families, and local organizations.

Building the Next Generation of Community Leaders

It's easy to focus on the challenges facing younger generations while overlooking the positive contributions they're already making.

The West High students volunteering at Anza and Towers elementary schools provide a welcome example.

Whether they're arranging decorations, helping children enjoy an activity, or staying afterward to clean up, their contributions help strengthen the connections between Torrance schools and neighborhoods.

And that deserves recognition.
