The Volunteer Center in Torrance is asking neighbors to help restock its pantry through a fall food drive on Friday, November 6, from 2 to 6 p.m. at 1230 Cravens Avenue.

The invitation goes beyond individual shoppers. Schools, businesses, faith communities, and other groups can organize collections together, turning a few extra groceries into a shared neighborhood effort.

Why weekend food matters

The center’s Food for Kids program began after a local school raised concerns about children returning on Mondays without enough food over the weekend.

Its response connects donated shelf-stable groceries with students and families across the South Bay. Volunteers and participating businesses help make that work possible.

That is the human purpose behind a pantry shelf: something a family can use when the next meal is uncertain. A practical donation can become part of a much larger chain of care.

What belongs in the collection box

The center lists breakfast foods, including cereal and granola bars; canned fruit and raisins; peanut butter and jelly; pasta; canned vegetables and meat; and soups among its needs.

If you want to help with coworkers or friends, start with the organization’s current donation list. Choose a collection deadline, identify someone to coordinate delivery, and tell contributors exactly what is needed.

A small, specific request is easier to act on than a general appeal. One group might collect breakfast items; another could focus on ingredients for simple meals.

Help is also available here

The center’s Torrance community pantry is listed as open Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Cravens Avenue address. Its published policy says identification is not required.

That detail is worth sharing privately with someone who may need it. Local Love includes making sure neighbors know where support exists.

For help organizing a collection, email programs@volcenter.org. Check the website before bringing a large delivery or arranging a visit outside the advertised drive.

This fall, a bag of groceries offers Torrance residents a concrete way to show up for one another.
